Located in the north-eastern part of the Textile City of Tirupur, Nanjarayan Tank is a heaven for local and foreign migratory birds spread over an area of about 125 hectares in a peaceful environment outside the busy industrial areas of the city. About 400 years ago, a king named Nanjarayan, who ruled this region, built this tank for the benefit of people of the region, hence it is called "Nanjarayan Tank" after him. It is also known as Sarkar Periyapalayam Reservoir.
As it is built across Nallar river, One of the tributaries of the Noyyal river flowing through Tirupur city, It has water throughout the year and being an exemplary work for the water management skills of the Tamilians.
Thus, this scenic Nanjarayan Tank not only provides water for agriculture and benefits mankind but is also home to various species of birds, reptiles, aquatic plants and trees. As it has sufficient water level and optimal climatic conditions throughout the year, not only attracts domestic birds but also many rare birds from the northern regions of the world like Europe and Russia to visit this Tank.
